Montevideo is the capital and the most heavily populated city of the Eastern Republic of Uruguay. The headquarters of the Mercosur and ALADI are also found there. As a political- legislative center, it operates as a convention center and cultural reference point for the whole country.
Located on the River Plate, it has an active port and an international airport, which is rated as the most modern one in Latin America.
Our capital is the birthplace of tango, candombe and Uruguayan style murga. The renowned parade "Las Llamadas" goes though some of the most important streets in the Barrio Sur neighbourhood. Cultural activity is manifested in all its forms. Montevideo has inspired numerous authors who have left their mark on universal literature, such as Benedetti, Galeano and Delmira Agustini.
Currently the center of Montevideo offers a wide range of hotel and tourist services, which include mostly four star hotels.
